World Cup 2026 is spread across three countries and 16 host cities, from the high altitude of Mexico City to the air-conditioned domes of Texas and the cooler air of the Pacific Northwest. That spread isn't just travel trivia — heat, humidity and elevation genuinely shape how matches are played.
Three countries, sixteen cities
The tournament is co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The 16 host cities split unevenly between them: eleven in the US, two in Canada and three in Mexico.
Mexico (3)
- Mexico City — the iconic Estadio Azteca, and at roughly 2,240 m above sea level the highest venue at the tournament by a distance. It hosts the opening match.
- Guadalajara — also at altitude, around 1,560 m.
- Monterrey — lower and notably hot in June.
Canada (2)
- Toronto.
- Vancouver — BC Place, a covered, climate-controlled stadium.
United States (11)
- Pacific & West: Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles (Inglewood).
- South & roofed: Dallas, Houston and Atlanta all have roofs that can close, plus Kansas City and Miami.
- East: Boston (Foxborough), Philadelphia, and New York/New Jersey, which stages the final.
Why conditions matter
A June–July World Cup across North America means very different environments from one match to the next. Three factors stand out.
Altitude
At elevation the air is thinner: the ball travels further and faster, and players tire sooner because there's less oxygen with every breath. Mexico City and Guadalajara are the obvious cases. Teams that press high and run hard for 90 minutes feel altitude most; sides used to it, or content to sit deeper and conserve energy, are less troubled. It's a real edge — and one reason the same team can look very different at sea level and at 2,000-plus metres.
Heat and humidity
Several US and Mexican venues are hot and, in places like Houston and Miami, very humid in midsummer. Heat saps the legs and makes a relentless high press hard to sustain, which tends to slow games down and favour patient, possession-based football over chaos. Expect cooling breaks in the hottest fixtures, and watch how teams manage tempo rather than chase every loose ball.
Roofs and controlled climates
Not every venue is at the mercy of the weather. Several stadiums — including Dallas, Houston and Atlanta in the US and Vancouver in Canada — are roofed or climate-controlled, taking heat and rain largely out of the equation. A match under a closed roof is a more neutral, predictable contest than one played in afternoon sun at altitude, which is worth knowing before you judge how a game might flow.
